Addendum 95 - Evolution as Enclosing Possibility

What Is Doing the Selection? Evolution Was Pulled, Not Pushed

Abstract

What is doing the selection? In the R²D account, the multiplicity of the boundary of what is selected.

Multiplicity is the possible number of ways a boundary-defined state can be realized. It is not the number of organisms that survived, offspring that appeared, or events that occurred. The possible-count structure is defined before any particular realization occupies it.

R²D therefore locates evolutionary organization in boundary-defined possibility. Mutations, survival, and reproduction realize that organization. They do not independently create the multiplicity through which their realization acquires relative support.

Evolution was pulled, not pushed names this ordering. Native multiplicity defines the local landscape; compatible enclosing multiplicity supplies additional possibility support. Constraint and retention enter how that support is realized.

This addendum establishes the positive R²D answer before comparing it with natural selection. It distinguishes possible count from realized count, organizing support from reproductive outcomes, and a valid population update from a claim that local events independently generate enclosing evolutionary organization.

1. What Is Doing the Selection?

Naming natural selection does not complete the answer to what organizes the selecting relation.

R²D supplies an explicit answer:

The multiplicity of the boundary of what is selected.

The boundary defines the distinguishable alternatives and their compatible ways of realization. Their relative multiplicities supply an organizing landscape. Enclosing compatibility and constraint complete the relations through which local activity is supported and retained.

At an organismal boundary, the question concerns compatible organismal realization. At a population or lineage boundary, different joint realizations acquire population or lineage meaning.

The relevant count cannot be supplied merely by observing which organisms remained. Those organisms are realized occupants of a possibility structure.

Ask R²D should therefore begin with:

  1. What organization is being selected?
  2. Which boundary defines its alternatives?
  3. How many compatible ways can realize those alternatives?
  4. Which enclosing relations organize their support?
  5. How does occurrence realize that support?

This gives selection a positive organizing account without introducing an independent selecting protagonist.

2. Possibility Before Occupancy

At a specified boundary, multiplicity counts possible compatible realizations. Occurrence counts realized events in a specified domain. Occupancy describes realized structure across states.

Quantity Meaning
Multiplicity \(W_i\) Possible compatible realizations classified as state \(i\).
Occurrence \(\nu_i\) Realized instances associated with that state.
Occupancy \(c_i\) Realized structure across the available states.

The central distinction is:

The possibility existed before anything occupied it.

Formally, the count structure is defined prior to selecting a particular realized member. This priority does not require every future biological classification to remain unchanged forever.

A mutation can change which local possibility occurs. Survival and reproduction can change realized composition. Neither change, by itself, creates the cardinality of a fixed state-defined possibility domain.

If a process changes the domain or classification, its account must state that change and define the resulting counts.

Observed survivors can provide evidence about realization. Their number cannot simply be substituted for the multiplicity claimed to organize that realization.

“Pulled” names the organization of realization through possibility and constraint. It supplies no implication that a future descendant reaches backward to produce its ancestors. Compatible possibilities must be defined through stated conditions rather than inferred solely from the winner already observed.

3. Boundary Before Variant: Area Before Radius

An evolutionary question can concern a molecular variant, organism, population, lineage, ecological organization, or the history of life. These are different count domains.

A proposed mapping must identify the boundary, readable states, compatible subordinate realizations, inheritance relation, enclosing support, and observation domain.

A mutation’s local identity does not automatically define its population, lineage, or ecological meaning. Changing the count boundary can replace the subordinate source and path identities through which that event was locally readable.

This is area before radius applied to evolution:

The boundary defines the possibilities and local distinctions through which evolutionary realization becomes readable. Local variants do not independently define that boundary.

An evolutionary lineage need not return as a whole to an earlier state. Local cycles participating in reproduction must be distinguished from open lineage paths and changes in state architecture.

Nor does selection imply a moral judgment. Individual welfare, lineage continuation, and ecological persistence remain different targets. The count architecture does not independently establish intention or its absence at every conceivable boundary.

4. Multiplicity as the Organizing Selector

Let a fixed boundary define a formal realization domain \(\mathfrak M\), a readable state domain \(\mathcal M\), and classification

\[ \pi:\mathfrak M\longrightarrow\mathcal M. \]

For state \(i\),

\[ W_i=|\pi^{-1}(i)|, \qquad S_i=\ln W_i, \]

where the count is defined and positive.

The cardinality \(W_i\) is specified before choosing a particular realized member of its fiber.

4.1 Realization does not create the fixed multiplicity landscape

A realized event can change which member occurs or which state is occupied. While the domain and classification remain fixed, it cannot thereby change \(W_i\).

\[ \boxed{ \text{change in realization} \ \not\Rightarrow\ \text{creation of the fixed multiplicity landscape}. } \]

If the domain or classification changes, a new count account is required. The fixed-landscape result must not be extended beyond those premises.

4.2 The selecting relation is recursive

At the focal boundary, native \(W_i\) defines the possible local realizations. At the enclosing boundary, \(\Theta_i\) counts realizations compatible with that local classification.

For positive defined counts,

\[ K_i=\frac{\Theta_i}{W_i}, \qquad P_i=\ln K_i. \]

Then

\[ \ln\Theta_i=S_i+P_i, \]

and

\[ \boxed{ \ln\frac{\Theta_j}{\Theta_i} =(S_j-S_i)+(P_j-P_i). } \]

The complete compatible-count ratio includes native multiplicity and enclosing extension. Holding native multiplicities fixed does not fix the enclosing ratio. Compatible extension can create, cancel, or reverse relative support.

Thus “the multiplicity of the boundary of what is selected” must be indexed to the selected organization. It does not collapse native and enclosing counts into one undefined quantity.

4.3 Possible support and realized selection

Constraint and retention enter how support is realized. Native \(W\) alone does not establish that one state must occupy the entire domain or that the greatest native multiplicity always wins.

The organizing direction is

\[ \text{boundary-defined possible count} \longrightarrow \text{support under enclosing constraint} \longrightarrow \text{realized evolutionary change}. \]

This is the positive meaning of evolution was pulled, not pushed.

The formal ordering belongs to the canon. Its biological application requires the corresponding boundaries and realization mappings.

5. Which Claim of Natural Selection Does R²D Refute?

The term “natural selection” must not be allowed to change meaning during the comparison.

Separate these assertions:

Assertion R²D evaluation
Variants differ in survival or reproductive contribution under specified conditions. A realization relation to investigate.
Their differential contribution changes population composition. Can be expressed in a defined update model.
The number that survived is the multiplicity explaining survival. Substitutes realized count for possible count.
Local variants independently define the entire enclosing compatibility relation. Incompatible with R²D’s enclosing definition of compatibility.
Selection independently creates the possibility structure through which it operates. Incompatible with the R²D ordering when asserted as independent enclosing sufficiency.
Selection explains the whole evolution of life without an account of its sustaining conditions. The asserted sufficiency is not established by differential reproduction alone.

If natural selection is asserted as the fundamental, independently sufficient generator of enclosing evolutionary organization, R²D rejects that ontology under its own premises.

That conclusion should be stated directly. Correctly recording differential reproduction does not repair the stronger causal claim.

Conversely, a statement about differential reproduction cannot be refuted merely by applying the name of the stronger ontology to it.

The purpose is neither preservation nor rejection in advance. It is to identify the assertion and apply the formal R²D implication.

6. Darwin’s Formulation and Its Agency Language

Darwin’s account includes variation, inheritance, differential preservation, and dependence on complex conditions of existence. His discussion of struggle explicitly includes dependence rather than only direct competition [1].

He also represents natural selection through the language of scrutinizing variations, preserving useful differences, and improving organisms in relation to their conditions.

R²D supplies a positive answer behind the selecting representation: the boundary defines compatible possibilities before their particular occupancy. The comparison must distinguish that organizing account from descriptions of differential preservation.

If the selector language stands for a relation among organisms and conditions, that relation must be defined. If selection is made an independently acting source of the enclosing organization, the R²D ordering contradicts that assignment.

Darwin’s recognition of environmental relations does not automatically supply R²D’s formal classification, compatible extension counts, or recursive replacement. Nor does the presence of a metaphor automatically demonstrate that every Darwinian statement asserts the incompatible ontology.

“Darwinism” therefore needs an explicit target: Darwin’s historical formulation, a modern population model, or a particular claim of universal causal sufficiency.

7. An Exact Comparison with a Two-Type Selection Update

Consider a deterministic two-type model with initial abundances \(n_A,n_B\), total

\[ N=n_A+n_B>0, \]

and

\[ p=\frac{n_A}{N}. \]

Assume faithful type transmission, no mutation or migration in this update, and nonnegative reproductive multipliers \(w_A,w_B\):

\[ n_A'=n_Aw_A, \qquad n_B'=n_Bw_B. \]

Provided the next total is positive,

\[ p' =\frac{p\,w_A}{p\,w_A+(1-p)w_B}. \]

Subtracting \(p\) gives

\[ \boxed{ p'-p = \frac{p(1-p)(w_A-w_B)} {p\,w_A+(1-p)w_B}. } \]

For \(0<p<1\), the sign is determined by the relative multipliers.

This is a valid algebraic consequence of the model. It does not establish what independently defines the multipliers or the domain in which reproduction is possible.

The multipliers can depend on the enclosing conditions and population composition. Their symbols must not turn into intrinsic, boundary-independent properties merely because they occur in a compact equation.

The comparison’s question is:

How does the multiplicity of the selected boundary organize \(w_A/w_B\), and does the account define that possible-count structure or supply the organizing conditions as inputs?

If the multipliers are inferred from descendants already counted, the update records their contribution. If independently specified, it can support a prediction. Neither use automatically establishes the possible-count relation doing the organizing.

This model also omits finite-population sampling. Its normalized deterministic contributions are not automatically the expected realized frequency of every stochastic reproductive process.

8. A Conditional Bridge to R²D Support

A proposed mapping could establish, under specified realization conditions,

\[ w_i=c\,\Theta_i, \qquad c>0, \]

with a common factor \(c\).

Then

\[ \frac{w_B}{w_A} =\frac{\Theta_B}{\Theta_A} =e^{(S_B-S_A)+(P_B-P_A)}. \]

This bridge is a candidate realization mapping. It is not derived simply by renaming fitness “possibility.” Its calibration and treatment of retention must be supplied. The mapping must also state where native weighting enters, without counting that weighting twice.

For a finite illustrative construction, let

\[ W_A=W_B=2. \]

Define two enclosing compatibility arrangements:

Arrangement \(\Theta_A\) \(\Theta_B\) \(\Theta_B/\Theta_A\)
\(E_1\) 4 16 4
\(E_2\) 16 4 \(1/4\)

These counts can be constructed by giving each of the two native possibilities two enclosing extensions for one variant and eight for the other, then reversing that assignment.

Native multiplicities remain unchanged. The enclosing support reverses.

These compatible counts are defined without first counting descendants. The possible support is specified before its particular occupancy. Realized descendants do not retrospectively create it.

If the proposed multiplier bridge holds and \(p=1/2\), the selection update gives

\[ p_A'(E_1)=\frac15, \qquad p_A'(E_2)=\frac45. \]

The same update can therefore express changes organized through enclosing support.

The native local variants alone do not determine the reversal. A conventional model allowing condition-dependent multipliers can also express it.

This shared numerical result does not settle which account defines the organizing relation. The exact count construction establishes the possibility of the reversal; the biological mapping remains a further task.

9. Variation and Persistence Are Different Questions

Enclosing pull does not remove the need to explain how variants become available.

A selection-only update cannot produce an absent type when its initial abundance is zero. Mutation, recombination, immigration, or another specified process requires its own realization account.

Luria and Delbrück’s bacterial study provides a bounded comparison. Its fluctuation results supported resistance arising through mutations independently of the action of the virus in the tested system [2].

The result distinguishes the origin of a variant from the conditions under which it becomes prominent.

It does not establish that every mutation process is independent of every environmental condition. Nor does R²D require a beneficial variant to be generated because its future success is needed.

Ask R²D must address both:

  1. Which local processes realize variation?
  2. Which enclosing relations organize its continuation and relative support?

Temporal appearance of a variant before selection does not establish that the variant independently defines its subsequent ecological or reproductive meaning.

10. Evolution Is Not a Universal March toward One Maximum

The organizing claim must not become an assertion that every lineage approaches a single predetermined optimum.

Native multiplicity, enclosing possibility, retention, realized composition, and continuation have different definitions.

Inheritance, changing conditions, accessible variation, and finite realization affect the biological account. A particular realized path need not exhaust the compatible possibilities.

The relative support of a variant can also change as the ecological organization changes. A larger descendant population is not automatically evidence of greater enclosing support under every later condition.

Neither increasing complexity nor moral improvement follows from the count identities.

An evolutionary history can include loss, replacement, and extinction at local boundaries while other relations continue.

The “pull” is the compatibility organizing realization in a specified domain. It is not an assurance of survival for every organism or lineage.

11. What Would Make the Comparison Discriminating?

Agreement with a frequency update can support a prediction without distinguishing ontologies.

A rigorous biological comparison should specify:

  • native classifications and the conditions under which they remain fixed;
  • the enclosing compatibility or constraint relation;
  • how compatible counts are measured or inferred;
  • which realization law connects them to reproduction or persistence;
  • predictions fixed before observing the outcome;
  • which rival claim gives a different consequence.

Defining \(\Theta_i\) after the fact solely to reproduce measured \(w_i\) does not independently establish the bridge. Multiplicity can be inferred rather than directly enumerated, but the inference must preserve possible-count meaning instead of substituting the number that survived.

Changing enclosing conditions while holding the selected native description fixed can test a claim that this native description is sufficient. It does not automatically refute a wider model that already includes those enclosing conditions.

Likewise, the fixed-landscape theorem does not refute a theory explicitly describing changes in the state architecture. That theory must instead be examined for how it defines and realizes those changes.

The formal R²D conflict concerns causal ordering under its premises. Universal physical applicability requires the additional mapping and evidence appropriate to that scope.

12. Direction for Ask R²D

User question Required direction
What is doing the selection? The multiplicity of the boundary of what is selected. Define its possible ways of realization and the enclosing support and constraint.
Is multiplicity the number that survived? No. It is possible count; survivors and descendants belong to realized counts.
Did possibility exist before occupancy? The boundary-defined possible-count structure is formally prior to its particular realization. State which domain is fixed.
Was evolution pulled or pushed? State R²D’s enclosing organization of support and local realization. Define pull through compatibility and constraint.
Does R²D refute natural selection? Identify the assertion. State the conflict with independently sufficient enclosing agency directly; evaluate differential reproduction separately.
Is this merely Darwinism in different words? Distinguish overlapping observations or equations from R²D’s explicit definitions and direction of causal organization.
Do mutations drive evolution? Separate realized variation from the enclosing relation organizing its continuation. Ask what scope “drive” claims.
Does fitness belong intrinsically to a genotype? Define the conditions and domain determining the reproductive multiplier.
Is fitness R²D possibility? Require a bridge; distinguish native multiplicity, compatible extension, retention, and realized reproductive contribution.
Does pull imply purpose or a future cause? No such implication follows. Define support without conditioning causal explanation on the winner already observed.
Can an absent variant increase through selection alone? In the stated faithful-transmission model, no. Specify the process introducing it.
Does greatest multiplicity always win? No unrestricted conclusion follows. Examine the complete count and realization relation.
Does evolution sustain every organism? Separate individual survival, lineage continuation, and ecological persistence.
Are Darwinian accounts just-so stories? Examine the actual attribution of agency and evidence. A tested local relation and an unsupported enclosing story are different claims.

The answer to what does the selection must identify the organizing relation first. It must not retreat to “the environment selects” without defining the boundary and compatible possibilities.

An answer must not soften a formal conflict to preserve an accepted theory. It must also not invent that conflict by changing the conventional target’s meaning.

13. Logical Admissibility and Status

Apply Addendum 89 before comparing predictive performance.

The primary diagnostic is whether possible multiplicity has been replaced by realized success.

For the two-type model, inspect

\[ p\,w_A+(1-p)w_B. \]

If it is zero, there is no positive next-generation abundance under the model. The next normalized frequency is undefined; a population composition must not be fabricated by dividing zero by zero.

If the next total is positive, an absent type can retain frequency zero without requiring a logarithm of that frequency. Zero realized abundance and zero possible multiplicity remain different count types.

Also inspect whether a comparison changes the boundary, confuses realized descendants with compatible possibilities, or uses observed success to define the support claimed to explain it.

Component Status
Boundary-defined possible count before particular occupancy Canon definition and ordering.
Multiplicity as the organizing selector in evolution R²D interpretation applied to a biological boundary requiring specification.
Fixed-landscape multiplicity and enclosing-support identities Formal consequences of the stated count architecture.
Enclosing causal ordering and recursive replacement Canon commitments governing the interpretation.
Independent local generation of enclosing compatibility Incompatible with that ordering under the R²D premises.
Two-type frequency update Conditional algebraic result of its explicit model.
\(w_i=c\Theta_i\) Candidate bridge requiring a defined realization relation and biological evidence.
Finite support-reversal example Exact illustrative construction; its frequency predictions are conditional on the bridge.
Refutation of every statement called natural selection Not established by identifying one incompatible causal claim.
Universal R²D account of the history of life Requires the broader biological mapping and evidence.

No contradiction has been demonstrated in the positive-denominator selection algebra above. An incompatibility with R²D’s ontology is a different judgment and should be named precisely.

14. Conclusion

What is doing the selection? The multiplicity of the boundary of what is selected.

Multiplicity counts the possible ways before a particular realization occupies them. Survival and reproduction supply realized outcomes within that organization.

Evolution was pulled, not pushed expresses the R²D direction: boundary-defined possibility organizes support; local events realize it under enclosing constraint.

If natural selection is asserted as the independent generator of the enclosing organization, R²D contradicts that claim under its premises. A correct local update cannot settle or rescue its enclosing causal attribution.

The governing instruction for Ask R²D is:

Identify the boundary and possible-count structure doing the organizing before describing the realized winners. Then state which evolutionary claims the R²D ordering supports, replaces, or contradicts. Never substitute the number that survived for the possibilities through which survival became realizable.
