Addendum 36 — Invariant Boundary Coupling Occurs Before mc²

Background Rapidity, Mechanical Calibration, and the Origin of Rest Energy

Addendum 36 — Invariant Boundary Coupling Occurs Before mc²

Abstract

Mass-energy equivalence is conventionally written

\[E_0=mc^2.\]

The equation is often read as though mass contains a primitive reservoir of energy whose magnitude is obtained by multiplying mass by c2 .

Recursively Realized Distinguishability (R²D) permits a different logical order.

Addendum 35 established the reference architecture prior to relativistic mechanics. A local boundary does not define its own zero of motion. Its velocity is read relative to an enclosing rapidity landscape. For a fixed local boundary Bm relative to reference Φ,

\[\frac{v_{m\mid\Phi}}{c_{\Phi}}=\tanh\xi_{m\mid\Phi}.\]

The rapidity coordinate belongs to the cross-boundary motion relation

\[B_m\mid\Phi,\]

whereas mass belongs to the local boundary coupling itself.

Thus:

\(m\to B_m,\quad\xi\to B_m\mid\Phi,\quad c_{\Phi}\to\Phi\) calibration.

Relativity is therefore not generated by rest mass. The background-relative rapidity geometry exists before mass is represented mechanically within it.

This addendum asks:

What mechanical and energetic coordinates does an orientation-even mass coupling acquire when it is represented in the background rapidity geometry derived in Addendum 35?

Begin with the most general positive reciprocal mechanical pair compatible with additive rapidity,

\[\Pi_+=\Pi_0e^{a\xi},\]

\[\Pi_-=\Pi_0e^{-a\xi},\]

where the invariant mechanical scale Π0 and rapidity weight a > 0 are initially unknown.

Define the orientation-odd additive mechanical read as momentum,

\[p=\frac{\Pi_+-\Pi_-}{2}=\Pi_0\sinh(a\xi).\]

Use the operational low-speed inertial-mass calibration

\[m=\left.\frac{dp}{dv}\right|_{v=0}.\]

Since

\[v=c\tanh\xi,\]

this gives

\[\Pi_0=\frac{mc}{a}.\]

Define the corresponding orientation-even mechanical coordinate

\[Q=\frac{\Pi_++\Pi_-}{2}=\Pi_0\cosh(a\xi).\]

Allow its most general constant energetic calibration,

\[E=bcQ,\]

where b > 0 is also unknown.

Mechanical work and momentum satisfy

\[dE=F\,dx,\qquad F=\frac{dp}{dt},\]

and therefore

\[\frac{dE}{dp}=v.\]

Substitution gives the identity

\[b\tanh(a\xi)=\tanh\xi.\]

Requiring this relation near zero rapidity forces

\[a=1,\qquad b=1.\]

Therefore

\[\Pi_0=mc,\]

and the mechanical coordinates become

\[p=mc\sinh\xi,\]

\[E=mc^2\cosh\xi.\]

Consequently,

\[E^2-p^2c^2=m^2c^4.\]

At zero background-relative rapidity,

\[\xi=0,\]

momentum vanishes while the orientation-even energetic read remains:

\[E_0=mc^2.\]

Rest energy is therefore not inserted as a primitive property of mass and is not used to construct Lorentz geometry.

It is the energetic calibration of an invariant local boundary coupling after that coupling is represented within an already-existing background rapidity geometry.

This derivation is conditional on the stated physical representation. It imports a velocity read, low-speed inertial-mass calibration, momentum, and the mechanical work relation. It does not derive energy, the thermodynamic internal-energy coordinate, or radiative transport from primitive R²D counts alone. In particular, it does not assign energetic properties to persistent hidden microstates beneath a mass-bearing boundary.

The central claim is:

invariant boundary coupling occurs before \(mc^2\).

1. Addendum 35 Removed Mass From the Foundation of Relativity

The preceding addendum established Lorentz geometry without beginning from rest mass.

For a local boundary Bm contained within enclosing reference Φ,

\[\xi_{m\mid\Phi}\]

is the logarithmic directional coordinate of the local realization relative to the background rapidity landscape.

Its physical velocity read is

\[\frac{v_{m\mid\Phi}}{c_{\Phi}}=\tanh\xi_{m\mid\Phi}.\]

The reference zero belongs to the enclosure.

The clock-ruler conversion

\[c_{\Phi}\]

belongs to the background calibration.

Neither is produced by mass.

Therefore the logical ordering is

reference boundary → rapidity geometry → mechanical representation of mass.

This prevents mass-energy equivalence from being used implicitly to create the geometry from which it will later be derived.

2. Mass and Rapidity Have Different Boundary Owners

Let

\[B_m\]

be a selected local mass-bearing boundary.

Its orientation-even physical coupling read is

\[m.\]

Its motion relative to enclosing reference Φ is

\[\xi_{m\mid\Phi}.\]

Thus

\[m=m[B_m],\]

whereas

\[\xi=\xi[B_m\mid\Phi].\]

Likewise,

\[c_{\Phi}=c[\Phi].\]

These symbols may appear in the same physical equation.

They do not belong to the same primitive boundary relation.

This distinction is essential.

3. Rest Is Not Defined by Mass

Mechanical rest means

\[\xi_{m\mid\Phi}=0.\]

It does not mean that mass has ceased to possess an internal or enclosing physical relation.

Nor does mass itself define the zero.

The condition

\[\xi=0\]

is a relation between Bm and Φ.

Thus:

rest is background relative.

The problem of rest energy must therefore be posed after the reference background has already been defined.

4. What Must Be Derived

The familiar relativistic formulas are

\[p=\gamma mv,\]

\[E=\gamma mc^2,\]

and

\[E^2-p^2c^2=m^2c^4.\]

These equations cannot be premises.

Likewise, the invariant mechanical scale must not be assumed to be

\[mc.\]

The energetic zero must not be assumed to be

\[mc^2.\]

The task is to obtain these relations within a specified physical mechanical representation from:

  1. the background rapidity geometry already established;
  2. the independently defined physical mass coupling;
  3. low-speed inertial mass;
  4. mechanical momentum and work.

These are physical premises and calibrations. The result does not follow solely from the dimensionless definitions of multiplicity and enclosing compatibility.

5. Mechanical Representation Must Respect Rapidity Composition

Addendum 35 established that nested collinear reference shifts add:

\[\xi_{02}=\xi_{01}+\xi_{12}.\]

Let

\[K(\xi)\]

be a positive mechanical scaling associated with that directional relation.

Successive reference changes must satisfy

\[K(\xi_1+\xi_2)=K(\xi_1)K(\xi_2).\]

Under the ordinary continuity requirement, the positive solutions are exponential:

\[K(\xi)=e^{a\xi},\]

where

\[a>0\]

is initially unknown.

Reversing direction gives

\[K(-\xi)=e^{-a\xi}.\]

Thus the most general positive reciprocal mechanical representation is

\[\Pi_+=\Pi_0e^{a\xi},\]

\[\Pi_-=\Pi_0e^{-a\xi}.\]

6. Do Not Assume Π0 = mc

The quantity

\[\Pi_0\]

has dimensions of momentum.

It is invariant under

\[\xi\longrightarrow-\xi.\]

But nothing yet establishes

\[\Pi_0=mc.\]

Likewise, nothing yet establishes that the rapidity weight of the mechanical pair is exactly unity.

Therefore both

\[\Pi_0\]

and

\[a\]

must remain unresolved.

This is necessary to avoid inserting the desired result into the starting equations.

7. The Mechanical Pair Has an Area-Before-Radius Structure

Before energy or momentum is defined, the reciprocal pair already possesses the invariant product

\[\Pi_+\Pi_-=\Pi_0^2.\]

Define the prior mechanical enclosure measure

\[\mathcal A_m\equiv\Pi_+\Pi_-.\]

Then define the corresponding invariant norm

\[\rho_m\equiv\sqrt{\mathcal A_m}=\Pi_0.\]

The logical order is therefore

reciprocal mechanical enclosure → invariant mechanical norm.

The invariant radius-like quantity is derived from the product.

It does not construct the product.

This is the mechanical form of area before radius.

8. Momentum Must Be Orientation Odd

Physical momentum reverses when the direction of motion reverses.

Therefore momentum belongs to the orientation-odd linear sector of the reciprocal mechanical pair.

Define

\[p\equiv\frac{\Pi_+-\Pi_-}{2}.\]

Then

\[p=\frac{\Pi_0}{2}(e^{a\xi}-e^{-a\xi}),\]

so

\[p=\Pi_0\sinh(a\xi).\]

Immediately,

\[p(-\xi)=-p(\xi).\]

This has the required directional symmetry.

9. The Orientation-Even Mechanical Coordinate Is Not Yet Energy

The corresponding even linear combination is

\[Q\equiv\frac{\Pi_++\Pi_-}{2}.\]

Therefore,

\[Q=\frac{\Pi_0}{2}(e^{a\xi}+e^{-a\xi}),\]

so

\[Q=\Pi_0\cosh(a\xi).\]

Under motion reversal,

\[Q(-\xi)=Q(\xi).\]

The quantity Q has momentum dimensions.

It has not yet been identified with energy divided by c.

10. The Even/Odd Mechanical Mapping Is a Physical Mapping

The use of linear even and odd combinations should remain explicit as a mapping step.

Energy and momentum are additive physical coordinates.

Orientation symmetry requires that an additive directional quantity be odd under reversal, whereas an additive scalar energetic quantity be even.

The two linear combinations

\[\Pi_+-\Pi_-\]

and

\[\Pi_++\Pi_-\]

are therefore the unique odd and even additive combinations of the reciprocal pair, up to normalization.

Thus:

\(p\) ↔︎ odd mechanical read,

\(Q\) ↔︎ even mechanical read.

This is a physical mapping principle, not a primitive Part I theorem.

11. Low-Speed Inertial Mass Independently Calibrates the Mechanical Norm

Define inertial mass operationally through the low-speed slope of momentum:

\[m=\left.\frac{dp}{dv}\right|_{v=0}.\]

From Addendum 35,

\[v=c\tanh\xi.\]

Near

\[\xi=0,\]

\[v\simeq c\xi.\]

Meanwhile,

\[p=\Pi_0\sinh(a\xi)\simeq a\Pi_0\xi.\]

Therefore,

\[p\simeq\frac{a\Pi_0}{c}v.\]

Hence

\[m=\frac{a\Pi_0}{c}.\]

Thus,

\[\Pi_0=\frac{mc}{a}.\]

No mass-energy relation has been used.

12. mc Has Not Yet Been Derived

At this stage,

\[\Pi_0=\frac{mc}{a}.\]

Therefore

\[\Pi_0=mc\]

cannot yet be written.

That result requires

\[a=1.\]

The value of a must therefore follow from a physical relation independent of the low-speed mass calibration.

13. Energy Must Belong to the Even Sector

Energy does not reverse sign merely because momentum reverses.

Its inertial motion-dependent read therefore belongs to the orientation-even sector.

Since Q has momentum dimensions, introduce the most general constant conversion

\[E=bcQ,\]

where

\[b>0\]

is an unknown dimensionless normalization.

Therefore,

\[E=bc\Pi_0\cosh(a\xi).\]

Neither a nor b has yet been fixed.

14. Why c Appears Here

The quantity Q has momentum dimensions.

Energy requires momentum multiplied by a velocity conversion.

Addendum 35 already established the relevant physical velocity calibration:

\[c=c_{\Phi}.\]

Thus the appearance of one factor of c in

\[E=bcQ\]

does not assume

\[E=mc^2.\]

It converts the even mechanical coordinate into energy units using the already-established clock-ruler calibration of the enclosing rapidity geometry.

The remaining normalization is b.

15. Mechanical Work Provides the Independent Constraint

For a mechanical displacement,

\[dE=F\,dx.\]

Momentum changes according to

\[F=\frac{dp}{dt}.\]

Therefore,

\[\frac{dE}{dt}=F\frac{dx}{dt}.\]

Since

\[v=\frac{dx}{dt},\]

we obtain

\[\frac{dE}{dt}=Fv.\]

Substitute

\[F=\frac{dp}{dt}.\]

Then

\[\frac{dE}{dt}=v\frac{dp}{dt}.\]

Hence

\[\frac{dE}{dp}=v.\]

This is the independent physical constraint linking the even energetic read to the odd momentum read.

16. Evaluate dE/dp

From

\[p=\Pi_0\sinh(a\xi),\]

we obtain

\[\frac{dp}{d\xi}=a\Pi_0\cosh(a\xi).\]

From

\[E=bc\Pi_0\cosh(a\xi),\]

we obtain

\[\frac{dE}{d\xi}=abc\Pi_0\sinh(a\xi).\]

Therefore,

\[\frac{dE}{dp}=bc\tanh(a\xi).\]

Mechanical work requires

\[\frac{dE}{dp}=v.\]

But Addendum 35 gives

\[v=c\tanh\xi.\]

Therefore,

\[bc\tanh(a\xi)=c\tanh\xi.\]

Cancel c:

\[b\tanh(a\xi)=\tanh\xi.\]

This identity must hold throughout the inertial domain.

17. The Rapidity Weight and Energy Normalization Are Forced Locally

The relation

\[b\tanh(a\xi)=\tanh\xi\]

can be evaluated near zero rapidity.

Use

\[\tanh\xi=\xi-\frac{\xi^3}{3}+O(\xi^5).\]

Then

\[b\tanh(a\xi)=ba\xi-\frac{ba^3}{3}\xi^3+O(\xi^5).\]

Equality with

\[\xi-\frac{\xi^3}{3}+O(\xi^5)\]

requires

\[ba=1,\]

and

\[ba^3=1.\]

Divide the second relation by the first:

\[a^2=1.\]

Since

\[a>0,\]

we obtain

\[a=1.\]

Then

\[ba=1\]

gives

\[b=1.\]

No infinite-rapidity limit is required.

The normalization is fixed by the local mechanical relation around the empirically accessible low-speed regime.

18. The Mechanical Invariant Is mc

Recall

\[\Pi_0=\frac{mc}{a}.\]

Since

\[a=1,\]

we obtain

\[\Pi_0=mc.\]

Therefore,

\[\mathcal A_m=\Pi_+\Pi_-=m^2c^2.\]

And the invariant mechanical norm is

\[\rho_m=mc.\]

The quantity mc has therefore been derived.

It was not assumed.

19. The Full Reciprocal Mechanical Pair

The two oriented mechanical coordinates are now

\[\Pi_+=mc\,e^\xi,\]

\[\Pi_-=mc\,e^{-\xi}.\]

These are not two hidden particles or two independent material momenta.

They are the opposed orientation-resolved mechanical coordinates of one invariant mass-bearing boundary represented in the enclosing rapidity geometry.

Their product is

\[\Pi_+\Pi_-=m^2c^2.\]

20. Momentum Is the Odd Read

The physical momentum is

\[p=\frac{\Pi_+-\Pi_-}{2}.\]

Therefore,

\[p=\frac{mc}{2}(e^\xi-e^{-\xi}).\]

Hence,

\[p=mc\sinh\xi.\]

Momentum is the orientation-odd mechanical read of the local mass coupling in the background rapidity geometry.

21. Energy Is the Even Read

The even mechanical coordinate is

\[Q=\frac{\Pi_++\Pi_-}{2}.\]

Thus,

\[Q=mc\cosh\xi.\]

Since

\[b=1,\]

the energetic read is

\[E=cQ.\]

Therefore,

\[E=mc^2\cosh\xi.\]

Energy is the energetic calibration of the orientation-even mechanical coordinate.

22. Rest Energy Follows at Zero Background-Relative Rapidity

Mechanical rest is

\[\xi=0\]

relative to the selected enclosing reference.

Then

\[\sinh0=0,\]

so

\[p=0.\]

But

\[\cosh0=1.\]

Therefore,

\[E_0=mc^2.\]

Rest energy has emerged without being used to define mass, rapidity, Lorentz geometry, or the invariant mechanical norm.

23. mc2 Is Not Energy Added to Mass

The equation

\[E_0=mc^2\]

should not be read as though a primitive material substance called mass has been multiplied by a mysterious universal number to reveal another primitive substance called energy.

The derivation instead gives:

\(m\) = local orientation-even coupling read,

\(c\) = background clock/ruler calibration,

\(mc\) = invariant mechanical norm,

and

\(mc^2\) = even energetic read of that norm.

Thus:

boundary coupling + background calibration → rest-energy read.

24. Area Before Radius Appears Again

The energy-momentum relation has the factorized form

\[E+pc=mc^2e^\xi,\]

\[E-pc=mc^2e^{-\xi}.\]

Multiply:

\[(E+pc)(E-pc)=m^2c^4.\]

Thus the prior multiplicative enclosure measure is

\[\mathcal A_E\equiv(E+pc)(E-pc).\]

The associated invariant norm is

\[\rho_E=\sqrt{\mathcal A_E}=mc^2.\]

So again:

enclosing product → invariant norm.

Rest energy is the radius-like energetic norm reconstructed from a prior multiplicative relation.

25. The Energy-Momentum Invariant

Using

\[E=mc^2\cosh\xi\]

and

\[pc=mc^2\sinh\xi,\]

we find

\[E^2-p^2c^2=m^2c^4(\cosh^2\xi-\sinh^2\xi).\]

Since

\[\cosh^2\xi-\sinh^2\xi=1,\]

we obtain

\[E^2-p^2c^2=m^2c^4.\]

The conventional energy-momentum mass shell is therefore the energetic/mechanical projection of the invariant local boundary coupling.

26. Velocity Follows From Energy and Momentum

Take the ratio

\[\frac{pc}{E}=\frac{\sinh\xi}{\cosh\xi}.\]

Therefore,

\[\frac{pc}{E}=\tanh\xi.\]

Addendum 35 gives

\[\frac vc=\tanh\xi.\]

Hence,

\[\frac{pc}{E}=\frac vc.\]

Therefore,

\[p=\frac{Ev}{c^2}.\]

This is a consequence, not a premise.

27. Recover the Standard Relativistic Forms

Since

\[\gamma=\cosh\xi,\]

we obtain

\[E=\gamma mc^2.\]

And since

\[\sinh\xi=\gamma\frac vc,\]

we obtain

\[p=\gamma mv.\]

Neither relation has been assumed.

Both follow from the background rapidity geometry, the local mass coupling, and independent mechanical calibration.

28. The Newtonian Limit

For

\[|\xi|\ll1,\]

\[\sinh\xi\simeq\xi,\]

\[\cosh\xi\simeq1+\frac{\xi^2}{2},\]

and

\[v=c\tanh\xi\simeq c\xi.\]

Therefore,

\[p\simeq mc\xi\simeq mv.\]

Likewise,

\[E\simeq mc^2+\frac12mc^2\xi^2.\]

Using

\[v\simeq c\xi,\]

we obtain

\[E\simeq mc^2+\frac12mv^2.\]

Thus Newtonian mechanics appears as the small-rapidity projection of the same invariant relation.

29. Kinetic Energy Is the Motion-Dependent Residual

Define

\[K\equiv E-E_0.\]

Then

\[K=mc^2(\cosh\xi-1).\]

For small rapidity,

\[K\simeq\frac12mv^2.\]

Thus kinetic energy is the directional-motion-dependent excess above the invariant zero-rapidity energetic read.

30. Rest Energy Is Not Hidden Translational Motion

At

\[\xi=0,\]

the reciprocal mechanical coordinates are equal:

\[\Pi_+=\Pi_-=mc.\]

Their odd difference vanishes:

\[p=0.\]

Their even sum remains:

\[Q=mc.\]

Therefore,

\[E_0=mc^2.\]

Rest energy is therefore not the energy of hidden net translational motion.

It is the energetic read of the invariant orientation-even mechanical relation when the background-relative odd coordinate vanishes.

31. Mass Is Not the Temporal Component

The invariant relation can be written

\[m=\frac{\sqrt{E^2-p^2c^2}}{c^2}.\]

Thus mass is not

\[E,\]

and it is not

\[p.\]

It is the local coupling whose mechanically calibrated invariant norm generates the combined energy- momentum relation.

Therefore:

mass ≠ energy component,

mass ≠ momentum component.

Mass belongs to the invariant boundary coupling class.

Energy and momentum belong to its background-relative physical decomposition.

32. The Null Branch Is the One-Sided Mechanical Limit

For a massive boundary,

\[E^2-p^2c^2=m^2c^4>0.\]

Both reciprocal mechanical coordinates remain nonzero.

A null relation satisfies

\[E^2-p^2c^2=0.\]

Therefore,

\[E=|p|c.\]

This corresponds to a one-sided limit of the reciprocal mechanical relation.

A finite massless occurrence is not obtained by simply taking

\[m=0\]

at finite rapidity.

Instead one must take a joint limit such as

\[m\longrightarrow0,\qquad\xi\longrightarrow+\infty,\]

while

\[mc\,e^\xi\]

remains finite and

\[mc\,e^{-\xi}\longrightarrow0.\]

Thus the massless branch is the one-sided projection limit of the two-sided massive relation.

33. Two Massless Occurrences Can Define a Massive Enclosing Boundary

Consider two massless propagating occurrences with equal and opposite momenta:

\[p_1=-p_2.\]

Then

\[p_{\mathrm{tot}}=0.\]

But their total energy is positive:

\[E_{\mathrm{tot}}=E_1+E_2>0.\]

The enclosing invariant therefore satisfies

\[M^2c^4=E_{\mathrm{tot}}^2.\]

Hence,

\[M=\frac{E_{\mathrm{tot}}}{c^2}.\]

The enclosing mass does not have to reside as rest mass inside either subordinate occurrence.

It belongs to the enclosing invariant relation.

The sum \(E_1+E_2\) and the opposing-momentum condition are assumptions of this specified physical energy-momentum representation. They are not sums of primitive energies assigned to the enclosing boundary’s formal microstates.

This is exactly the kind of boundary reassignment expected by recursive replacement. The earlier mass- energy development already exposed this consequence explicitly.

34. Composite Mass Is Boundary Owned

For a general enclosing physical system,

\[M^2c^4=E_{\mathrm{tot}}^2-p_{\mathrm{tot}}^2c^2.\]

In its enclosing zero-momentum read,

\[p_{\mathrm{tot}}=0,\]

so

\[E_{\mathrm{tot}}=Mc^2.\]

The mass belongs to the enclosing invariant relation.

It is not necessarily the arithmetic sum of subordinate rest-mass coordinates.

The composite energy and momentum in this equation are likewise physical coordinates assigned to the specified enclosing system. Their additive representation does not restore independently persistent subordinate energies as primitive causes of its invariant mass.

Thus:

mass is boundary owned.

35. Binding Energy Changes Enclosing Mass

Suppose separated physical boundaries reorganize into a new bound enclosing boundary. Compare the zero-momentum energetic reads of the separated system and the resulting bound system under the same physical calibration. If released radiation has left the bound system, it is not counted as part of the bound system’s final energy; retaining that radiation would define a different enclosing system for this comparison.

The new enclosing system possesses its own invariant energetic relation.

If the bound system has a lower zero-momentum energy,

\[E_{\mathrm{bound}}<E_{\mathrm{separated}},\]

then

\[M_{\mathrm{bound}}<M_{\mathrm{separated}}.\]

For the two specified system boundaries, the calibrated difference is

\[\Delta M=\frac{\Delta E_0}{c^2}.\]

No primitive mass substance has disappeared.

The enclosing physical organization and the boundary used to assign its invariant energetic read have changed. Neither the energetic balance nor the emitted radiation is a transfer of primitive count or primitive mass substance across recursive levels.

36. “Internal” Energy Is a Boundary State Coordinate

Thermodynamics calls \(U_B\) the internal energy of a selected system boundary \(B\). In R²D, the adjective internal does not locate energy inside the subordinate configurations classified as microstates at \(B\). \(U_B\) is an energetic coordinate of the whole thermodynamic state. The possible subordinate realizations and their native multiplicity are defined by that boundary before they are sampled. Their samples do not create \(U_B\) or supply a continuously readable subordinate trajectory at \(B\).

Physical decompositions may describe thermal, chemical, binding, electromagnetic, and other contributions under specified controls. Those terms name useful energetic reads of the chosen system. They do not give the enclosing microstates independent, persistent energetic properties or make the system’s energy a sum of primitive energies owned by hidden subordinate things. In particular, a sequence of different sampled configurations does not establish temperature-driven hidden trajectories. Calling those projected trajectories thermal fluctuations mistakes sampled multiplicity for a subordinate cause.

The present mechanical derivation supplies a conditional relation for the complete system’s calibrated zero-momentum energy \(E_{0,B}\) and invariant mass \(M_B\):

\[E_{0,B}=M_Bc^2.\]

For two states of that same specified physical system, under a common reference calibration,

\[\Delta M_B=\frac{\Delta E_{0,B}}{c^2}.\]

Replacing \(\Delta E_{0,B}\) with \(\Delta U_B\) requires an independently specified physical accounting relation between the thermodynamic state coordinate and the complete zero-momentum energy. It does not follow merely because the energy is called internal. The dimensionless multiplicity \(W_{B,i}\), the thermodynamic coordinate \(U_B\), and the relativistic coordinate \(E_{0,B}\) have different definitions.

During emission, radiation acquires its physical read as a recurrent electromagnetic occurrence at its receiving boundary. Part IV distinguishes this from recursive carry, which reclassifies a completed local closure rather than transporting a packet of \(U_B\) upward. A physical source–radiation energy balance can relate the reads of specified systems, but \(U_B\) is not a primitive substance that leaps over a count boundary to cause radiation. The organizing relation belongs to the enclosure; its energetic and radiative reads belong to their stated boundaries.

This is why enclosing mass cannot be reduced to static multiplicity cardinality, yet neither can its energetic read be attributed to independently propertied microstates.

37. Energy Is Not a Primitive Substance

The equation

\[E_0=mc^2\]

does not require a primitive material substance called energy stored inside another primitive material substance called mass.

Energy is a physical coordinate assigned to recursively organized relations.

Mass is a physical coupling read of a specified boundary.

The equation states how that boundary coupling is energetically represented after the background rapidity and mechanical calibrations have been supplied.

Temperature supplies a later thermodynamic calibration, not a primitive driver of sampled subordinate motion. Radiation supplies a recurrent physical read, not evidence that hidden thermal fluctuations generated the enclosing state. Thus:

energy balance is a physical relation among specified boundary reads, not transport of a primitive energetic substance across recursive levels.

38. Why an Arbitrary Additive Constant Does Not Alter the Derived Rest-Energy Norm

Nonrelativistic potential energies often permit an arbitrary additive reference:

\[U\longrightarrow U+C.\]

The present quantity is different.

The derived mass-energy relation is the norm of one homogeneous reciprocal mechanical representation:

\[(E+pc)(E-pc)=m^2c^4.\]

An arbitrary addition

\[E\longrightarrow E+C\]

would introduce another independent scalar coordinate and would not preserve the same homogeneous reciprocal pair.

Thus the invariant rest-energy norm of this representation is fixed:

\[E_0=mc^2.\]

This does not prevent other independently defined potential-energy coordinates from possessing conventional additive zeros.

39. Persistent Mass Recurrence Now Belongs Downstream

Earlier development attempted to use persistent mass recurrence to explain rest energy.

The present ordering is cleaner.

First derive

\[E_0=mc^2.\]

Only afterward, if an independently established physical recurrence-energy calibration applies,

\[E=\hbar\omega,\]

the invariant rest-energy relation may acquire the recurrence read

\[mc^2=\hbar\omega_m.\]

Then

\[\omega_m=\frac{mc^2}{\hbar}.\]

This is a downstream phase-frequency calibration of the already-derived invariant energetic relation.

It is not the premise from which mc2 is obtained.

40. The Compton Read Is Therefore a Consequence

If

\[mc^2=\hbar\omega_m,\]

then the associated reduced spatial calibration is

\[\bar\lambda_m=\frac c{\omega_m}.\]

Therefore,

\[\bar\lambda_m=\frac{\hbar}{mc}.\]

Equivalently, the ordinary Compton wavelength is

\[\lambda_C=\frac h{mc}.\]

Thus the familiar Compton relation becomes a downstream clock-ruler representation of the invariant mechanical scale

\[mc.\]

The Compton ruler does not define mass primitively.

41. c Again Belongs to the Background Calibration

The derivation contains the factors

\[mc\]

and

\[mc^2.\]

The factor c does not belong intrinsically to mass.

It was already defined by Addendum 35 as the clock-ruler conversion of the enclosing background rapidity geometry.

Thus:

\(m\) → local boundary coupling,

while

\(c\) → background physical calibration.

Their product

\[mc\]

is the mechanically calibrated invariant norm.

Their further energetic conversion

\[mc^2\]

is the zero-rapidity energetic read.

42. The Factor c2 Is Therefore Not Mysterious

One factor of c enters when the local coupling magnitude m is converted into the invariant mechanical scale:

\[m\longrightarrow mc.\]

A second factor enters when the even momentum-dimensional mechanical coordinate is converted into an energetic coordinate:

\[mc\longrightarrow mc^2.\]

Thus:

\(m\xrightarrow{\times c}\) mechanical norm \(\xrightarrow{\times c}\) energetic norm.

The appearance of c2 therefore follows from two distinct physical calibration steps within the same background rapidity geometry.

43. The Derivation Does Not Say Mass Is Frequency

The downstream relation

\[mc^2=\hbar\omega_m\]

does not imply the primitive identity

\[m=\omega_m.\]

Mass and frequency have different dimensions and different boundary meanings.

Mass is a boundary coupling read.

Frequency is a physical rate read of recurrence.

Their relationship requires the physical calibrations

\[\hbar\]

and

\[c.\]

Thus:

mass ≠ frequency.

They can become calibrated representations of the same invariant physical relation without becoming primitively identical.

44. Addendum 35 and Addendum 36 Now Form One Clean Chain

Addendum 35 established:

enclosing reference → background rapidity geometry

with

\[\frac vc=\tanh\xi.\]

Addendum 36 adds the local orientation-even mass coupling:

local mass coupling + background rapidity geometry → mechanical reciprocal representation.

Independent mass and work calibrations then force

\[\Pi_0=mc,\]

\[p=mc\sinh\xi,\]

\[E=mc^2\cosh\xi.\]

Hence,

\[E^2-p^2c^2=m^2c^4,\]

and

\[E_0=mc^2.\]

The logical order is therefore:

reference boundary → rapidity geometry → boundary mass → mechanical norm → energy and momentum → mc…

45. Theorem — Boundary Mass Generates the Relativistic Energy- Momentum Read Only After Reference Geometry Exists

Let Bm be a fixed mass-bearing local boundary with physical orientation-even coupling read m.

Suppose:

  1. Addendum 35 supplies a background-relative rapidity coordinate \(\xi\) satisfying

\[v=c\tanh\xi;\]

  1. successive rapidity shifts compose additively;

  2. the positive reciprocal mechanical representation has general form

\[\Pi_{\pm}=\Pi_0e^{\pm a\xi},\]

with

\[a>0;\]

  1. physical momentum is the orientation-odd additive read,

\[p=\frac{\Pi_+-\Pi_-}{2};\]

  1. the orientation-even mechanical read is

\[Q=\frac{\Pi_++\Pi_-}{2};\]

  1. inertial mass is independently calibrated by

\[m=\left.\frac{dp}{dv}\right|_{v=0};\]

  1. energy is a constant velocity-dimensional calibration of the even read,

\[E=bcQ;\]

  1. force and work satisfy

\[F=\frac{dp}{dt},\qquad dE=F\,dx.\]

Then

\[a=1,\]

\[b=1,\]

and

\[\Pi_0=mc.\]

Therefore,

\[p=mc\sinh\xi,\]

\[E=mc^2\cosh\xi,\]

and

\[E^2-p^2c^2=m^2c^4.\]

At zero background-relative rapidity,

\[E_0=mc^2.\]

46. Logical Status

Established Before This Addendum

Addendum 35 provides:

 • enclosing ownership of the motion reference;
 • additive background-relative rapidity;
 • the physical mapping

\[v=c\tanh\xi;\]

 • the background clock-ruler conversion c.

The existing R²D physical development provides:

 • local orientation-even boundary coupling read as mass;
 • momentum as a physical mechanical coordinate;
 • force calibration

\[F=\frac{dp}{dt}.\]

Physical Mapping Assumptions Used Here

This addendum uses:

 • energy and momentum as additive even/odd mechanical coordinates;
 • low-speed inertial mass calibration

\[m=\left.\frac{dp}{dv}\right|_{v=0};\]

 • mechanical work

\[dE=F\,dx.\]

These are independent physical calibrations.

They do not assume relativistic energy or momentum.

They are nevertheless physical premises; the result below is not a theorem derived from primitive compatible counts alone.

Derived Here

This addendum derives:

\[a=1,\]

\[b=1,\]

\[\Pi_0=mc,\]

\[p=mc\sinh\xi,\]

\[E=mc^2\cosh\xi,\]

\[E^2-p^2c^2=m^2c^4,\]

\[E_0=mc^2.\]

It also recovers

\[p=\gamma mv,\]

\[E=\gamma mc^2,\]

and the Newtonian limits.

Downstream Corollaries

With an independently established recurrence-energy calibration,

\[E=\hbar\omega,\]

one may subsequently obtain

\[mc^2=\hbar\omega_m\]

and the corresponding Compton ruler.

These are consequences, not premises.

Not Established Here

This addendum does not derive:

• Standard Model elementary mass values; • the Higgs mechanism; • quantum field vacuum structure; • nuclear binding energies from primitive R²D counting; • particle creation amplitudes; • universal cross-boundary invariance of dimensional c; • gravitational coupling of stress-energy; • curved spacetime; • Einstein’s field equations.

Those belong to later physical mappings.

Nor does the derivation identify \(U_B\) with the complete zero-momentum energy \(E_{0,B}\) for every thermodynamic system, derive a radiation process from \(U_B\), or give causal agency to hidden temperature-driven microstate trajectories. Those identifications require separate physical definitions; the last trajectory is not a readable R²D causal entity at the enclosing thermodynamic boundary.

47. Principle — Invariant Boundary Coupling Occurs Before Rest Energy

A mass-bearing local boundary possesses an orientation-even physical coupling read

\[m\]

before that coupling is assigned relativistic energy and momentum coordinates.

The enclosing reference boundary supplies the rapidity geometry and clock-ruler calibration.

Mechanical representation within that geometry produces the reciprocal pair

\[\Pi_{\pm}.\]

Independent low-speed mass and work calibrations uniquely fix its invariant norm to

\[mc.\]

The corresponding orientation-even energetic read at zero rapidity is

\[mc^2.\]

Therefore:

boundary coupling → background rapidity representation → mechanical norm → rest-energy read.

Thus:

invariant boundary coupling occurs before \(mc^2\).

48. Conclusion

Mass-energy equivalence need not be a primitive statement about matter containing energy.

R²D begins earlier.

A local boundary possesses an orientation-even coupling read:

\[m.\]

An enclosing background supplies the rapidity geometry through which motion is represented:

\[\xi.\]

The same background supplies the physical clock-ruler conversion:

\[c.\]

These quantities belong to different boundary relations.

Mass is local.

Rapidity is relational.

The conversion c is enclosing.

Representing the local mass coupling mechanically within the background rapidity geometry gives the most general reciprocal pair

\[\Pi_{\pm}=\Pi_0e^{\pm a\xi}.\]

No assumption is made that

\[\Pi_0=mc.\]

No assumption is made that

\[a=1.\]

No assumption is made that the even mechanical coordinate is already relativistic energy.

The orientation-odd read gives momentum:

\[p=\Pi_0\sinh(a\xi).\]

Low-speed inertial mass requires

\[\Pi_0=\frac{mc}{a}.\]

The even read is

\[Q=\Pi_0\cosh(a\xi).\]

Allowing its general energetic calibration

\[E=bcQ\]

and imposing the independent mechanical relation

\[\frac{dE}{dp}=v\]

with

\[v=c\tanh\xi\]

forces

\[a=1,\qquad b=1.\]

Therefore,

\[\Pi_0=mc,\]

\[p=mc\sinh\xi,\]

and

\[E=mc^2\cosh\xi.\]

The invariant energetic-mechanical enclosure is

\[E^2-p^2c^2=m^2c^4.\]

At zero background-relative rapidity,

\[p=0,\]

while the even energetic coordinate remains:

\[E_0=mc^2.\]

The factor c2 is therefore not mysteriously attached to mass.

One factor of c converts the local coupling into its invariant mechanical norm.

The second converts the even mechanical coordinate into its energetic read.

Both conversions belong to the physical calibration supplied by the enclosing rapidity geometry.

This physical calibration establishes the mass–energy relation within its stated mechanical representation. It does not turn a thermodynamic body’s \(U_B\) into energy owned by its subordinate microstates. A change in the body’s measured radiative output can be described with physical energetic balances while radiation remains a recurrent enclosing read, not an upward causal packet of internal energy. The thermodynamic and radiative assignments must each state their operative boundary.

The local mass coupling comes first.

Its mechanical and energetic representations come later.

Persistent phase recurrence, Compton frequency, and Compton wavelength may subsequently calibrate the same invariant relation, but they do not generate it.

The resulting hierarchy is

reference boundary → rapidity geometry → local mass coupling → reciprocal mechanical representation → mc →

Thus:

invariant boundary coupling occurs before \(mc^2\).
